DEMOLITION TO BEGIN ON SOUTH KILBURN ESTATES
    08 March 2010

Residents in Brent’s South Kilburn estate will see big changes to their area over the next few months as demolition began this week at Marshall House and other sites in the area.

L&Q is Brent Council’s partner in the development. Development of the Marshall House site will start with the demolition of existing four- and five-storey blocks of flats and building of two new blocks, ranging from four floors to eleven floors in height and including 111 affordable homes.

The contemporary design will set the standard for future development sites in South Kilburn, helping to contribute to the long-term regeneration of the area.

The new housing comprises 153 self-contained flats and maisonettes, three communal gardens, private garden areas to the front and rear of ground-floor properties and general landscaping of the site. There will also be children’s play areas and green space incorporated into the design.

Rupert Moyne, L&Q’s Neighbourhood Services Director said: “We are really excited about starting work on this fantastic regeneration project. We are committed to working with the local authority and residents to realise their vision for the future of South Kilburn.”

Councillor Paul Lorber, Leader of the Council, said: “This is the start of a very exciting new period in the regeneration of South Kilburn and will build on the work that has already taken place. Brent Council and South Kilburn Partnership (SKP) are committed to the future of South Kilburn and developing plans for the long term improvement and regeneration of the area.”

NOTTING HILL GETS GO-AHEAD FOR BARHAM PARK ESTATE WORK
    08 March 2010

Notting Hill Housing, working in partnership with Countryside Properties and Brent Council, has received planning consent to redevelop the Barham Park estate over five years starting this summer.

All 214 existing properties will be demolished, in three separate phases, to make way for 335 new sustainable homes in a newly designed neighbourhood.

The homes will range from one-bedroom flats to large family houses with gardens. The scheme also includes retail space, and provision for a neighbourhood office/community space. The site totals approximately 5.65 acres and is located in the borough between Wembley and Harrow on the Hill.

The first phase will produce 51 maisonettes and flats for affordable rent, 31 flats for shared ownership sale and 37 homes for private sale. These homes will be completed in mid to late-2012.
    Sustainable development

On completion the whole development should achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. Heating and hot water will be provided from a district heating scheme; green roofs and other drainage measures, will minimise rainwater run-off and promote biodiversity.

John Hughes, Group Director of Development at Notting Hill Housing said: "Notting Hill is delighted to be moving forward with the regeneration of Barham Park. We want to give this great local community a neighbourhood that they can be proud of and will work with our partners to deliver new homes of good quality as quickly and cost-effectively as possible."

SBHG MOVES SOUTH OF THE RIVER
    08 March 2010

Shepherds Bush Housing Group has moved south of the river for the first time, offering homes to people who live or work in Wandsworth who would not otherwise be able to buy them.

The 14 apartments in Charterhouse on Eltringham Street are shared ownership, meaning people buy a share from SBHG and then pay rent on the remainder of the property. They can increase their share as they can afford to do so over time.

Councillor Martin D Johnson, Wandsworth Council’s Executive Member for Housing, opened the development of one and two bedroomed properties.

Paula Fance, Director of Development and Sales at SBHG, said: “These are stunning affordable properties. We hope that people will come along to take a look, and see what they can afford in this sought after location. Wandsworth is a popular part of London. Helping people to afford a home here, through shared ownership, is at the very core of what we do.”

Cllr Jonhson said: “We know that these great apartments built by SBHG will be very popular. People buying these homes expect the best; the apartments offer quality and space. We’re looking forward to working with SBHG again in the future to meet our affordable housing demand.”

The development was supported by public subsidy through the Homes and Communities Agency. Before SBHG developed the land, it was a partly occupied commercial units. The development is part of a larger regeneration of the Battersea Reach area along the river.

The 14 shared ownership properties are part of The Charterhouse development of 54 homes by Shanly Homes. The properties are available for residents or key workers in Wandsworth with a household income lower than £60,000.

PARADIGM WINS SECOND AWARD FOR GREENWOOD CLOSE
    08 March 2010

Paradigm Housing has won a second award for its ambitious eco-community in Hayes.

Greenwood Close won the Sustain' Magazine 2010 Award for Development. The judges scrutinised entries looking for excellence, sustainability and the environmental, social and economic benefits of each development. Greenwood Close stood out because it is the first large-scale affordable housing initiative to achieve Level 5, Code for Sustainable Homes in London and the South.

They said: “For the judges, this sensitive, sustainable, infill project displays good use of MMC and shows care with issues of visual intrusion.”

Andrew Main, Paradigm's Executive Director for Business Development said: "We are delighted to be recognised for this sustainable development and very proud to have achieved Code Level 5.”

The development, completed in 2009, provides 24 one- and two-bedroom apartments for people on Hillingdon’s housing register. It was built in partnership with the London Borough of Hillingdon with funding from the HCA, and the striking look of the five low-level buildings was created by architects Arcanthus.

Advanced green features include a biomass boiler to supply heating and hot water, a curving sedum roof for each of the five low-level buildings and a rainwater storage system to provide water for flushing toilets. Issues such as water use, waste and recycling were all carefully considered in the build.

Project Manager, Rebecca Clark said: “It was a lot of hard work for all the team, and we had to learn a lot about the new technology, but it’s been worth it.”

Greenwood Close previously won Best Off-site Housing Development in the UK at the Offsite Construction Magazine Awards in October 2009. It was also a finalist for the Sustainable Smaller Social Housing Project of the Year category in Inside Housing's 2009 Sustainable Housing Awards.

RESIDENTS VOTE ‘YES’ TO TRANSFER HOMES TO L&Q
    09 March 2010

Residents in what was previously known as the ‘Chrysalis PFI area’ have voted yes to transfer ownership of their Lewisham Council homes to London and Quadrant Housing Trust (L&Q).

A total of 2,436 tenanted and 1,154 leasehold homes will be transferred to L&Q after a ballot of residents in Catford South, Forest Hill/Perry Vale/Sydenham and Rushey Green/Crofton Park/Lewisham Central showed an overwhelming majority in favour of the transfer.

L&Q will spend £62m in a repair and improvement programme for tenanted homes delivering the Government’s Decent Homes standard within the first 2 years following transfer. Works will include new kitchens and bathrooms for tenants and new double glazing. New or upgraded heating systems to individual homes and loft insulation will improve energy efficiency of homes and reduce heating bills. The average investment level per property is around £24,000 per household.

L&Q will also spend £7m improving the environment and consulting with residents on a range of improvements such as: installation of security entry phone systems; improving lighting in communal areas; improving and installing new boundary fencing and railings; landscaping communal gardens and open areas.

Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “This is great news for residents in the transfer areas. L&Q has committed to making a significant investment in peoples’ homes and the local environment. This investment, along with their aim to start works soon after completion of the transfer, shows they are determined to fulfil their promises to residents.”

David Gannicott, Group Director of South London at L&Q, said: "This is a tremendous result, we are really pleased that residents have voted in favour of transferring their homes to L&Q. This is the first time that we have run three ballots together and achieved such a high mandate from residents.

“We will be spending over £60m in the first five years to bring these properties up to and beyond the Decent Homes standard as well as investing in improving the look of the area and in local community projects. We look forward to continuing this work in partnership with residents and Lewisham Council."

Residents selected L&Q as their preferred RSL early last year after looking at bids from a range of housing providers. L&Q have worked closely with residents since then, detailing the improvements and developments that residents felt strongly about. Residents will have the opportunity to make decisions and effect change through new Community Boards, to be established in each of the 3 transfer areas.

WORK BEGINS ON MASSIVE CLAPHAM PROJECT
    09 March 2010

A landmark £80m mixed-use regeneration scheme that will transform leisure services across two sites in Clapham town centre has secured funding and started on site.

The development by PPP specialist, Cathedral Group, working in partnership with United House, will provide Clapham with a new, highly sustainable leisure centre, a new, state-of-the-art library, a new GP surgery and some of the most high quality residential accommodation in the borough including affordable housing in partnership with Notting Hill Housing Group.

The PPP deal means that in the teeth of the recession, Cathedral has been able to secure £35m funding for this hugely important project (including a loan funding from the Homes and Communities Agency’s kickstart programme), pre-sell £46m of the development and guarantee the London Borough of Lambeth a brand new library and leisure centre funded entirely from the sale of the private sector element of the development.

Martin Wood, Project Director at Cathedral said: “To have delivered this project to this point in time represents a significant achievement. We won the bid to develop this project in 2007 with the market at its peak.

“At the bottom of the market we have been able to deliver a beautifully-designed, complex, residential-led regeneration scheme with two state-of-the-art, free public buildings next to an underground line that has been widely commended. We haven’t made a single compromise on design, quality, commitment to the community in Lambeth or the delivery standards of our scheme.
What we are building in Clapham is a really successful model for delivering complex community benefits for the future.”

Mary Seacole House on Clapham High Street is currently being demolished. A beautiful new 12-storey building, designed by Studio Egret West, will replace it. The glass-fronted ground floor will contain a new library based around an audacious spiral design, connecting to a new medical centre, a café, internet zone, performance space and community rooms, reinforcing the community spirit of the development. 136 apartments, many with full height windows and views across the city, will be built above the new public facilities and will be some of the highest quality in Clapham.

NEW FRONT DOORS TO IMPROVE HOME SAFETY IN TOWER HAMLETS
    09 March 2010

The security of homes across the borough has been given a boost, with around 500 new ‘Secure by Design’ front doors being installed in Tower Hamlets.

Homes located in areas with high levels of anti-social behaviour are receiving the new police-approved doors, which have been tested to meet high security standards.

Not only will the doors give residents greater peace of mind, they have also been designed to improve insulation – helping residents save energy and reduce their heating costs. The doors also come with a special self-finish, meaning no paint touch-ups are necessary to keep them looking fresh and new.

Tower Hamlets Council Lead Member for Housing and Development, Cllr Marc Francis, said: “In July last year, Cabinet approved £3 million of extra spending for home improvements, and part of this money is going towards these new doors.

“Not only are they an important security improvement for our tenants, but they give a real lift to the look of our estates. We will try to roll the new doors out to other blocks in the years to come.”

The new doors are being installed in two phases with the second phase providing around 300 residents with new doors.

Tower Hamlets Homes Chief Executive, Gavin Cansfield said: “Every resident has the right to feel safe in their own home. Feedback so far from residents is that they appreciate the improved security the doors bring.”

Tower Hamlets Homes has worked with the council’s Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Anti Social Behaviour Prevention and Enforcement Manager to identify the homes most in need of the new Secure-by-Design doors.

HOUSING ASSOCIATION HELP UNEMPLOYED LEWISHAM RESIDENTS
    09 March 2010

Lewisham residents are set to receive help on their CVs and guidance on applying for jobs thanks to an innovative joint venture between local housing associations.

The Hyde Group, in partnership with Lewisham Homes, L&Q and Family Mosaic, has secured a pot of money for its Get Lewisham Working open days from the council Working Neighbourhoods Fund, which aims to provide employment support to local residents.

Thanks to the scheme, outreach workers will visit Lewisham estates to offer information and advice on training and employment opportunities, as well as link residents with job support agencies. In addition, a range of short, informal training courses will be held at central locations across estates.

The programme held its latest open day at Meriton Mansion on Thursday, where residents were able to obtain help with their CVs and receive useful interview tips, as well as take part in a special money management workshop.

Project Co-ordinator for Hyde, Oliur Rahman said: “It is only right that we find new ways to help our unemployed residents return to the workplace. Through the programme, residents will be able to access all the support they need to find the employment or training that’s right for them, knowing that help is available every step of the way.”

Employment Initiatives Manager for Family Mosaic, Rosie Hewson, said: "We are really pleased that this partnership means we can extend our work with unemployed residents to those living in Lewisham. Thanks to 'Get Lewisham Working' and the funding from the council we will be able to identify barriers stopping people from getting into employment and refer them onto the organisation best placed to support them."

Community Involvement Manager for Lewisham Homes, Sue Asquith said: "This partnership is about being proactive in our community and reaching out to those who need support to get back into employment. With funding from the Council and expertise across the partnership, it's a fantastic opportunity for Lewisham residents to work with people dedicated to helping them identify skills and experience that could be valuable to potential employers."

POPLAR HARCA LEADS WAY IN HOUSING SUPPORT
    10 March 2010

A housing association in the East End of London is the first in its area to open a new office dedicated to offer advice and support for residents who want to move.

Poplar HARCA invited local MP, Jim Fitzpatrick to officially launch the Home Choice office.

Over 50 local residents and housing figures attended the event and had the opportunity to meet the team and find out more about the services on offer.

The Home Choice office will be home to a dedicated Housing Options Team where residents can drop in and get advice on re-housing issues, bidding, homeswaps, shared ownership schemes and other housing issues.

Audrey Sutherland, Head of Housing Options at Poplar HARCA said: “The opening of the new Home Choice office means that we are listening to what our residents want. Our residents told us they prefer to talk to us face to face about the housing options available to them.

“This office will give them the opportunity to come and discuss their housing issues with us and find out how we can help.”

CITY AND ST MUNGO’S TO OPEN B&B-STYLE ACCOMMODATION FOR OLDER ROUGH SLEEPERS
    10 March 2010

St Mungo’s and The City of London Corporation are opening The Lodge at St Ursula’s - B&B-style accommodation specifically aimed at helping long term, older rough sleepers.

Guests at 40-bed The Lodge will have more independence over their lives than in a traditional hostel, but also the support of Lodge staff and outreach workers who will actively help them with move on options, depending on people’s various needs. It is believed to be the first joint charity and local authority managed project of its kind in the UK.

The City and St Mungo’s expect The Lodge’s guests to be long-term rough sleepers, aged between 40 and 65, some of whom may have been on the streets for decades. It is hoped that guests will move from The Lodge into more permanent accommodation. The first guests are set to move in on Monday 15 March on referral from outreach services.

They will have a regular bed for the night with staff on hand if they do need any further help. They will also have the chance to meet staff from outreach teams and access other services who will make regular visits to the hotel each week. Outreach workers will actively assist guests with move-on options, depending on people’s various needs.

The Lodge has been refurbished to a high standard by leading architect Gus Alexander. It has a welcoming communal TV lounge, a dining area, a laundry and a kitchen for guests to use. The Lodge has received funding from the Homes and Communities Agency’s £80m Places of Change programme, The City of London Corporation and the New Hope Foundation. This exciting project draws some of its inspiration from the privately-run Lindsay Hotel, based within The City of London.

Charles Fraser, Chief Executive of St Mungo’s, said: “We know that older rough sleepers are some of the most resistant to the usual routes away from the streets - often very independent, self-sufficient people used to their own patterns of daily life. There is a tendency for them to be unwilling to use the current services on offer. Our challenge then is to provide a better alternative to sleeping on the streets that appeals to them directly.

“The answer, we hope, is the Lodge. As a hotel rather than a hostel it will offer guests a fresh approach, with the back up of assistance to find their own permanent accommodation. The Lodge is an exciting example of what can be achieved when funders, council partners and services providers share a desire to try a new, imaginative approach to tackling rough sleeping. We’re very pleased to be working with the City of London in this new joint venture.”

Billy Dove, Chairman of the Community and Children’s Services Committee at the City, said: “The City of London works hard to engage with rough sleepers, support them to access specialist services and ultimately to get them off the streets and to begin rebuilding their lives and The Lodge at St Ursula’s is a further demonstration of this commitment.

"I am confident those using The Lodge will thrive in a more independent environment, with the support of staff where necessary. We are grateful to the Homes and Communities Agency and others who are backing The Lodge as a place with the potential to transform hundreds of lives."

GREEN FINGERED RESIDENTS CREATE ECO-HAVEN ON PEPYS ESTATE
    10 March 2010

Residents from the Pepys Estate, Deptford have transformed an overgrown, under-used plot of land into an eco-haven capable of producing fruit and vegetables all year round thanks to an innovative partnership between The Hyde Group and the Evelyn Community Garden.

The results of the planting will be shared out amongst residents across the estate, and is set to be followed up by the creation of a garden on the Hummingbird Estate in Peckham in partnership with Lewisham based charity, Envirowork.

Hyde Plus Regeneration Co-ordinator, Dominic Leary, said: “Growing Spaces is a great example of what can be achieved when local residents come together to improve their local environment.

“We are thrilled with what has been achieved at Millard Road through co-operation, endeavour and hard work and greatly look forward to seeing the fruition of the scheme."

MAYOR ANNOUNCES FUNDING BOOST FOR HOMELESS
    11 March 2010

    Boris Johnson
    Boris Johnson
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced a £900,000 funding boost to help hundreds of the capital’s homeless gain essential skills and get back to work.

The Homeless to Work programme, funded by the Mayor through the London Development Agency (LDA), will see outreach teams working directly with homeless in London offering them opportunities to gain skills and training.

The scheme will also target individuals with a history of rough sleeping to rebuild their lives off the streets. Working with the Mayor’s London Delivery Board, set up to end rough sleeping in the capital by 2012, it is hoped that the programme will help up to 600 homeless people get back to work and find a home.

Johnson said: “A skilled work force is the backbone of London’s economic success and the key to our competitive edge. In these tough economic times it is absolutely essential that we maintain this valuable commodity and ensure that everyone, especially those who are all too often considered ‘unemployable’, can gain the skills they need to get a job.

“Losing your home does not mean losing your talent or ambition and this new project will play a hugely important part in helping hundreds of London’s homeless get back on track and get back to work. ”

The Programme complements the work of the Department of Works and Pension to get drug addicts, ex-offenders and homeless back to work. The £900,000 of funding has been specifically ring-fenced to provide a bespoke service for the capital’s homeless and will be the only part of the programme to use outreach workers to directly target those in need.

Brendan Loughran, Director of Learning and Skills at the LDA said: “This joint approach is allowing us to bring together the expertise and knowledge of both the LDA and DWP to target a part of society that is often neglected by mainstream systems. Homeless Londoners represent a particularly hard to reach group of workless, many have drug or alcohol related problems or mental health issues.

“The one to one support they’ll get from Homeless to Work will provide them with important tools to help them overcome many of the barriers to getting off the streets and into safe, secure accommodation and sustainable jobs.”

WORK BEGINS ON NEW DAGENHAM HOMES
    11 March 2010

Ground breaking ceremonies are being held at the first wave of Barking and Dagenham Council house new-build sites.

Cllr Mick McCarthy, cabinet member for regeneration, and Cllr Phil Waker, cabinet member for housing, broke the ground at Highland Avenue in Dagenham, location of seven new houses. The turf will also be turned at King William Street, and Essex Road, Barking, and Rogers Road and Bromhall Road, in Dagenham. A total of 48 houses are planned across all sites.

A further 15 houses are planned for Beamway in Dagenham and Charlton Crescent in Thames View, Barking. These developments form the second phase of building works.

Also present at Highland Avenue were representatives from United House the contractor who will build houses at four of the sites. The contractor at King William Street Quarter, formerly known as the Lintons, is Mansell Partnership Housing.

Preparation work has already started on most of the sites, and now that ground breaking has taken place it won't be long until building work starts in earnest. It is hoped that the first tenants will get their keys at the end of the summer.

All the houses will be fully owned and managed by Barking and Dagenham Council and rented out to local families on the housing waiting list. Like all local authorities Barking and Dagenham has been prevented from building its own housing for more than two decades. Those rules changed last year and the council was quick to commit funds of its own and apply for a government grant to start building houses again.

Cllr Liam Smith, Leader of the Council, said: "This is the first time in more than 25 years that we have been able to build new council housing, and we are determined to push on with an ambitious programme.

"Our stock of council properties has gone done dramatically over the last 20 years - mainly because many tenants chose to buy them through the Right to Buy scheme. These 63 houses are the start of what we hope will be an even bigger programme to try and redress that balance and provide more houses for local families."

SUPPORT AGENCIES AND L&Q WORK TOGETHER TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER
    11 March 2010

Representatives from more than 50 specialist support agencies joined L&Q at a conference aimed at strengthening our relationships and exploring ways of helping each other through the complex and changing support environment.

The Working together, supporting each other conference at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel in central London was organised by L&Q’s Agency Contracts and Quality Team.

Representatives from the National Housing Federation and the Department of Communities and Local Government were also present, outlining the challenges ahead in the Support environment. There were also workshops on resident involvement, personalisation, procurement, housing law, and how L&Q and the agencies can work more closely to tackle future challenges.

Sonia Bernard, Assistant Director – Communities, Partnerships and Support at L&Q, said: “L&Q remains committed to its vulnerable residents. Our relationships with the specialist support providers are crucial.

“The environment we are working in is going through a period of unprecedented political and economic upheaval so it is more important than ever that we work together and support each to ensure that our vulnerable residents receive all the care and help they need.

“This conference was a fantastic opportunity for us all to get together and discuss some of the key issues affecting us and look at ways of tackling them together. We had some great feedback from the people who came along and I’ve no doubt we will be able to work more effectively together as a result.”

Virginia Metzner from the Single Homeless Project (SHP) said: “The conference was very interesting and it was good to spend time with other organisations and share information and experiences. The day was enjoyable and informative.”

Margaret Coward from Life Housing said: “It was useful to meet other providers and see the range of services involved.”

GENESIS HELPS YOUNG AND OLD UNITE TO FIGHT OBESITY IN EAST HAM
    11 March 2010

The Golden Ambassadors with young people
The Golden Ambassadors with young people
Fifteen young people from Priory Park Youth Centre have gotten together with five of Genesis Community’s Golden Ambassadors to take part in a pizza-making competition as a fun and creative way to highlight the importance of healthy eating.

As well as baking, both groups discussed the problem of obesity in England and explored the links between it and poverty. While East Ham has the youngest population in the UK, it also has one of the unhealthiest. The abundance of fast food shops and ‘cheap eat’ options prove too tempting for many of the young people in the area.

The Intergenerational Workshop took place at Priory Park Youth Centre, based in the heart of East Ham, and situated just behind the West Ham football stadium. It formed part of a project the youth centre has been running six months called Healthy Eating and Healthy Lifestyle.

The project was awarded money by the Youth Opportunity Fund. Funding has helped them buy equipment and resources to make healthy and nutritious food – for example, the group have, in teams, made fruit smoothies, pizzas, tortilla wraps and ciabatta sandwiches.

The group will now share their experiences with the Live East debate forum, with the view to engaging young people, (aged 16 - 30), in discussions about challenging topics that are relevant to them.

The Golden Ambassadors shared with the Priory Park young people some of their experiences from the last year, including how they have been teaching primary school children to knit, and care home residents to use computers. The Priory Park young people will be learning to knit for Sport Relief and the Ambassadors learn new computer skills from the youngsters.

Richard Bowyer, Springboard resident and Golden Ambassador, said “Being of an outgoing nature, I find it really easy to talk to young people, and join in with their events. I therefore relish opportunities like this one and am happy to support this project anytime I’m available. Hi fives to all!"

Iain Mackechnie-Jarvis, Head of Genesis Community, said “Genesis Community promotes opportunities for life change among people in the communities in which it works in London and the South east. I’m delighted to see younger and older residents coming together at fun and creative learning events like this one.”

NEWHAM RESIDENTS OPEN DOORS TO EMPLOYMEN
    11 March 2010

    Atricia Stiff
    Atricia Stiff
Residents from Cranberry Lane estate in Newham are a step closer to securing a job, having graduated from East Potential’s Open Doors course.

The course gives people the skills and confidence needed to look for a job, and it is being funded through the Families Together project. Open Doors supports unemployed people to overcome barriers which may prevent them from working.

These barriers could be a lack of confidence, computer skills or having English as a second language. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace and the focus is on establishing long term career goals, rather than just finding a job.

The course is part of Families Together, a four-year project supporting families in Tower Hamlets and Newham, two of the most deprived boroughs in London, to break the poverty cycle. It aims to provide support to the whole family by engaging with schools to improve the educational achievements of local children and young people. It was awarded £800,000 of funding by London Councils.

East Potential has been running Open Doors courses for three years and has high success rates: of the 59 people who completed the course last year, 40% went on to employment and 31% went into higher education.

Led by East Potential Families Together is delivered in partnership with Poplar HARCA housing Association, Community Links, Bromley By Bow Centre, Limehouse Project and the Institute of Public Policy Research.

Open Doors courses will run at Cranberry Lane and Aberfeldy estates twice a year for the next three years.

BARKING AND DAGENHAM FAMILIES TO BID ON FIRST NEW COUNCIL HOMES
    12 March 2010

Families on Barking and Dagenham Council's housing waiting list will this week get the chance to bid for one of the first new council houses being built in the borough for 25 years.

Choice Homes magazine, which carries details of all vacant council properties, will today contain descriptions of the new council homes. Local residents on the council waiting list who have completed the necessary assessment forms will be able to bid for one of the 17 homes listed in the magazine.

Construction on the new council homes, which will be on four sites in the borough, will begin in the next few weeks and preparation work is already well underway. The first properties are expected to be ready for occupation by the end of the summer.

After they have been advertsied, the houses will be allocated so tenants can move in as soon as building work is complete. It will also allow tenants to have an input into some of the final cosmetic stages of the building work. Once accepted, successful bidders will not be able to bid on any other properties that come up in the meantime.

Ground breaking ceremonies have been taking place at the five sites this week. A further 15 houses are planned for Beamway in Dagenham and Charlton Crescent in Barking. These will be allocated at a later date.

Cllr Liam Smith, Leader of the Council, said: "This week's announcement is a historic one for the borough. This is the beginning of the process of allocating the first council houses in Barking and Dagenham that we've seen for a quarter of a century.

"These are new homes for local people and we want to have tenants from our housing waiting list lined up for these houses so they can move in as soon as possible.

"These will be brand new three or four bedroom houses built to a very high standard and will make lovely homes for 48 families. I would urge families who are on the waiting list and who have completed the necessary assessments to make sure they look at the magazine and check it for details on how to bid."

Cllr Phil Waker, cabinet member for housing, added: "This is the beginning of our house building programme, with the next 15 being built at Thames View and on the old garage site in Beamway, near Rainham Road South. We have a long way to go to fulfil the need for decent housing, but we will be looking at all ways to keep building for local families."

GENESIS COMMUNITY ORGANISES AFRICAN ARTS IN HACKNEY
    12 March 2010

Victoria Dzivenu dances with the children
Victoria Dzivenu dances with the children
The sound of African drums could be heard echoing through the corridors of Woodberry Down Primary School in Hackney, as the Pan-African Drumming and Dance Theatre group kicked off the first of two workshops to teach students the arts of African drumming, dancing and storytelling, thanks to funding by Genesis Housing Group’s Community Chest fund.

PADDT received £1,000 from Genesis’ Community Chest fund to provide young people with the opportunity to learn new skills, and to increase their self-confidence, team-working skills and understanding of different cultures.

Over two days, 40 young people learned how to tell the famous African story of Anansi the Spider and Onini the Python. The storytelling incorporated dance and music, and ended with a performance to the rest of the school and parents on Friday 6 March.

said, as she danced along with the pupils, “This is a fantastic multicultural activity that encourages cross-curricular (music, literacy, drama) links and allows pupils to interact and work with each other in different circumstances.”

PADDT is made up of local residents from the Hackney community. Genesis Community and Manor House Development Trust have been working with the group to help them grow so that they can bring drum and dance to more Hackney residents.

Victoria Dzivenu, local resident, lead dance tutor and treasurer for PADDT, said: “This is my passion and dream.”

Over the last year she has been running dance and drum lessons from the Robin Redmond Resource Centre in Hackney, charging participants a small fee but finding most of the cost out of her own pocket. But thanks to the grant from Genesis Community now she doesn’t have to fund it herself.

Vitolina Samu, Community Grants & Support Officer at Genesis Community, said “Genesis Community and Manor House Development Trust are proud to have helped PADDT deliver their dream to the enthusiastic Woodberry Down residents. Genesis is committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and positive community initiatives and it’s great to see the children getting really into this. It goes to show the great wealth of talent in this community.”
